THEATRE OF THE OPPRESSED
Rooted in the work of Augusto Boal, Theatre of the Oppressed emerged as a political tool for non-actors in marginalised communities - to understand systems of power and to imagine liberation together. Today, it continues to inspire groups across the world to investigate the roots of social and political oppression, to question what has been normalised, and to step into shared responsibility for change.
Worms Theatre Company’s approach is deeply influenced by Barbara Santos and her praxis of Teatro de las Oprimidas. This lineage recognises that every story unfolds within intersecting structures of gender, race, and class. The goal is to reframe perceptions of oppression, avoid the pitfalls of individualising the issue and share the responsibility to initiate change. The audience are encouraged to intervene collectively from their own unique social positioning (class, gender, race, profession, etc.).
Worms wish to reignite the political fury of TO in an age of discombobulating lethargy. We combine the struggles and praxis of Santos and Boal and weave in the mystic and the trickster. Through improvisation, ecological connection, ritual, embodied dream-making we imagine new worlds and move towards them. We address the real motherload of our society; the questions that people live and die for.
Weekly from 27 April - 17 June
Trinity Centre, Bristol
Across the eight weeks, our closed group will journey through movement, sound, aesthetics, crisis, hope and world-dreaming. Together we will choose the central question we want to explore, and through collaborative improvisation and embodied inquiry we will create an original Forum Theatre play. This piece will grow directly from the stories, experiences and ideas of the participants themselves.

7-WEEK INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE OF THE OPPRESSED
Spark Space, Bristol
Facilitators - Teddy Monroe and Laura Singer
Across seven weeks, we delivered a workshop series that engaged over 100 people in the foundations of Theatre of the Oppressed, framed through Santos’s feminist discursive lens. Aimed at non-actors, the programme delved into multiple strands of the practice, including Rainbow of Desires, Cop in the Head, Forum Theatre, Image Theatre, and Media Theatre. In partnership with, and sponsored, by Coexist.
